My first few weeks in New York have been amazing but a total whirlwind and I hoped I could blog more often to share all the great gluten free finds I have made. You can keep up to date on my daily food diary via twitter though just follow me on @glutenfree4tea . The first thing that’s great about eating out gluten free in New York is the amount of places that offer it, I have found or stumbled across so many restaurants, cafés and shops all over the city that offer gluten free menus or gluten free dishes. It’s also so convenient here, I ended up getting alot dinners to takeaway which is perfect if you are working in the city or need something quick for lunch or dinner. Here are my list of finds so far;
Murray Hill and Upper East Side
Il start with one of the best, a 100% gluten free bakery! I was very lucky that one of their cafés is right by where I am currently staying so I have already been a few times. They have the most delicious fresh baked cakes, cookies, brownies and cupcakes. Plus they do a special grilled cheese sandwich on their home baked bread. Definitely Continue reading
Thank you very much to all my twitter followers who helped me find somewhere to eat lunch in Southampton a couple of weeks ago. We were visiting a friend down there but as he was new to the area too, none of us had any idea of gluten free places to go. Thank you in particular though to Emma ( @emma_jayne86 ) who suggested about 10 different places to try but most recommended La Baronia, a Mexican just outside the city centre. If you are ever around Southampton and want the best gluten free Mexican food, go here! It is amazing and basically the whole menu is gluten free ( see all the GF symbols below) and the food is superb. All the tacos and tortillas are made from corn and I felt safe that the kitchen had good GF knowledge so there would be no cross contamination.
I am always very excited to hear about new gluten free products especially those that are designed to make life easier for living gluten free. My friend Justine at Flux Fluid Motion UK recently put me in touch with Saviour Snacks as she loved their inventive product. As a fitness guru, Justine is always on the look out for healthy and nutritional foods that work together with an active lifestyle so I knew she was onto a good thing. They make healthy and balanced snack boxes that are tailored to your dietary or lifestyle needs and then they deliver them to your door in the post. People have probably heard of Graze boxes, well I was always very jealous of colleagues who munched away at these in the office and I hadn’t seen any like Saviour that offer an allergy free version.
I was excited when my box arrived in the post a few days later and loved the packaging it came in. They identify each type of box with a sticker on the side so mine was clearly gluten free only. Each box comes Continue reading
I am always on the lookout for anywhere that offers gluten free snacks and meals on the go which are a lifesaver for anyone who is gluten free or coeliac. I recently did an investigation (see here) into the all the different pre-packaged sandwiches that are now available from supermarkets and cafes which shows that the market for GF on the go is expanding. Whilst there are also plenty of restaurants with gluten free menus it seems the hot ‘fast food’ market has been slower off the block. None of the big fast food chains like Subway, MacDonald’s or Burger King have introduced any specific allergy menus making it hard to find a hot GF meal when out and about.
That is slowly changing though as I have recently discovered Tortilla and its delicious, fresh, coeliac friendly Mexican food which can be taken away or eaten in. Tortilla has fast become my fail-safe for a quick bite to eat whilst shopping or an easy dinner after work, not only because Continue reading
I heard on the Twitter grape-vine that Gourmet Burger Kitchen had introduced a gluten free burger bun and never one to miss out, I went to try it out. I was back home in Yorkshire recently visiting my parents and decided to make a day trip to the beautiful York city centre which has a branch of GBK. On arrival I asked the staff if they had GF buns on offer and she said not only did they have the buns but a whole gluten free menu! This was a great surprise as it also contained many more items that were gluten free. The staff were excellent with their GF knowledge and were able to answer all my questions on arrival. One of the first questions I asked was why chips were missing off the gluten free menu and Continue reading
I recently wrote a blog taste testing pre packaged gluten free sandwiches and Marks & Spencer came out on top due to their good quality bread. Not only are their sandwiches great but they have an excellent selection of gluten free groceries which they have recently expanded. I went to my local store to see for myself and I was very impressed by the new additions! They have created some more unusual gluten free products such as the mini coconut macaroons and the sliced rustic loaf, neither of which I see very often in other supermarkets.
- Sliced White Boule (Rustic loaf)
- Brown Bloomer Slices
- Ginger Snap Biscuits
- Triple Chocolate Cookies
- Mini Coconut Macaroons
- Gouda Cheese Crackers
- Mini Cheese Crackers (in 5 handy individual Continue reading
